ITINERARY: 8 Days / 7 Nights
Day 1: Departure Date (Thursday)
Travel by Deluxe motorcoach to Jackson, Mississippi. Dinner in Jackson.
Day 2: Jackson, MS. (Friday)
Today’s itinerary includes a visit to the home of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, Farish Street Historical District, and the
Alamo Theater, where the musical greats such as Duke Ellington, Lionel Hampton, and Louis Armstrong once performed. This
afternoon you’ll continue on to Birmingham, Alabama, where you’ll have free time after dinner
to explore on your own or perhaps take in some “Mississippi Blues”.
Day 3: Birmingham, ALA. (Saturday)
You’ll meet “living historians” at 16th Street Baptist Church, the site of the tragic 1963 bombing that killed four little girls, a pivotal
event for the Civil Rights Movement. The Civil Rights Institute and the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame are also on the itinerary before
traveling to Atlanta, Georgia.
Day 4: Atlanta, GA. (Sunday)
This morning, you’ll have the opportunity to attend Sunday Services at Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary, and visit
“Old Ebenezer”, where Dr. King and his father were both pastors. Free time after lunch to enjoy the famed Atlanta
Underground.
Day 5: Atlanta, GA. (Monday)
The morning will be spent in the Sweet Auburn District visiting Dr. King’s birth home, Dr. King’s gravesite, and the APEX
Museum before heading to Tuskegee, AL, made famous by the Tuskegee Airmen of WWII, and the Tuskegee Institute. This
evening, you’ll travel on to Montgomery, Alabama, generally considered to be the “birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement”.
Day 6: Montgomery, ALA. (Tuesday)
Today, at the Rosa Parks Library and Museum, you’ll view a multimedia re-enactment of Mrs. Park’s calm resistance to
relinquishing her seat on the bus, sparking the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955-1956. You’ll have a guided tour of the 91-year-
old Dexter Avenue Parsonage where Dr. King lived with his family while he served as Pastor of Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
The Parsonage has been fully restored with original furniture and furnishings used by the King family. You’ll also be among the
first to view the new Civil Rights Memorial, designed by renowned artist Maya Lyn, and opened in 2005, honoring those who
were killed during the struggle for Civil Rights.
Day 7: Selma, ALA. (Wednesday)
You’ll take the moving “Footsteps to Freedom” Tour at the National Voting Rights Institute and meet
“living historians” who actually participated in the 1965 March on Bloody Sunday. They will guide you along the same route taken
by Dr. King and the brave civil rights advocates, both young and old, who in the face of violent opposition, walked across the
Edmund Pettus Bridge on their way to Montgomery to protest voting rights restrictions.
Afterwards, you’ll travel back to Jackson, Mississippi, passing en route through Meridian, Mississippi, where three Civil Rights
activists from the North were killed during the early days of the Movement. After dinner in Jackson, you’ll have the rest of the
evening free to explore Jackson or to prepare for tomorrow’s journey home.
