Beginning in the 1803 when the United States acquired what is now
Colorado as part of the Louisiana Purchase, Colorado history has become
legendary. Early residents came in search of clean air believed to cure
tuberculosis.
Gold was discovered in the 1850's leading to Colorado's first "gold rush".
"Pikes Peak or Bust" became the ralying cry for many hopefuls, including the
legendary Buffalo Bill. Just 20 years later, in 1875, silver-rich ores were
found, enticing more settlers to rush into the area. Over the years Denver,
Colorado's capital, has survived the usual frontier disasters of fire, flood and
even bankruptcy, only to rebuild from a dusty village to a vibrant city
combining Eastern cosmopolitanism and Western pioneer spirit.
Sitting at the foot of Pikes Peak, Manitou Springs is best known for the
naturally carbonated mineral springs which bubble up from the earth.
Legends about the curative power of the mineral waters first brought
American Indians to the area, followed later by health seekers seeking spa
treatments. Today, it retains its "art-colony" atmosphere among quaint
houses and narrow lanes.
Colorado Springs was created as a playground for the wealthy by
General William J. Palmer, who in 1871 had forged his Denver & Ro Grande
Railroad westward into the area. The city's name was derived from the
nearby mineral springs and from the mining town of Colorado City. When
English gentry settled there, they brought polo, riding to hounds, gentlemen's
clubs and Tudor architecture and dubbed the Springs "Little London". This
landed gentry speculated in mining and made millions, from which the city
benefited and the Springs became one of the wealthiest cities per capita by
the first decade of the 20th century.
Additional Colorado heritage and cultural sites will be visited in Golden,
which thrived during Colorado's Gold Rush Days, and in Arvada, which is
located near Ralston Creek, the site of Colorado's first gold strike in 1850.
