| LOS ANGELES ARCHITECTURE - AN ECLECTIC LANDSCAPE© A Custom-Created Fully-Escorted Luxury Tour (Limited to 14 persons) 7 DAYS / 6 NIGHTS IN THE "CITY OF ANGELS" OUR EXPERT destination personal tour GUIDE Laura Massino, published L.A. architectural historian, member of The Los Angeles Conservancy, the Historical Society of Southern California, the Society of Architectural Historians, and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, holds a Masters Degree in architectural history. She has written extensively about the Los Angeles work of Frank Lloyd Wright, and did her Masters Thesis on the Postmodern Architecture of Los Angeles, a complete history of architecture in Los Angeles. She has authored several books on L.A.'s eclectic neighborhoods and their distinctive architectural styles reflective of their "period" in L.A.'s history. Laura Massino and Snobby Tours®, Inc. have custom-created the Itinerary for this Tour covering L.A.'s architectual history -- from extravagant mansions to opulent movie houses, grand apartments to elegant department stores, luxury hotels to utilitarian civic buildings. Architects featured include: Richard Neutra, R. M. Schindler, Greene & Greene, Frank Lloyd Wright and his son Lloyd Wright, Julia Morgan, John Lautner, Meyer & Holler, S. Charles Lee, Wallace Neff, I.M. Pei, Paul Williams, Jose Rafael Moneo, Arata Isozaki, Frank Gehry, Richard Meier, Myron Hunt, and others. TOURING Highlights (partial list subject to change) Downtown L.A./Chinatown/Little Tokyo Reflects all three centuries of L.A. architecture within about four square miles -- the Victorian homes of Angelino Heights (L.A.'s first suburb) and the Bradbury Building (featured in the movie "Wolf", among others), City Hall and the Civic Center, Hearst's Herald Examiner Building (designed by Julia Morgan of Hearst Castle fame), Lady of Angeles Cathedral, and the new Disney Performance Hall. Pasadena At one time populated by L.A.'s "old money", most particularly the Chandlers (owners of the L.A. Times and upon whom the movie "Chinatown" is based), restrictive covenants, and exclusive country clubs, Pasadena is filled with early 20th century mansions and elegantly manicured grounds. Also known for having many Greene & Greene Craftsman-style masterpieces, the historic Langston Hotel, the Wrigley Mansion, and Old Town, Pasadena has also hosted for over 50 years, an annual Showcase House of Design making over a Old Pasadena mansion in April/May of each year. Silver Lake/Hollywood Known primarily for mid-20th century modern homes by Richard Neutra, Frank Lloyd Wright and his son Lloyd Wright which overlook L.A. Opulent Art Deco movie palaces of the 1920's and '30's, such as "The Egyptian" were built along Hollywood Boulevard where Hollywood royalty attended movie premiers. This area of L.A.has numerous structures designed by S. Charles Lee and Wallace Neff. Hancock Park/Miracle Mile/West Hollywood/Beverly Hills From the 1920's to the 1960's, the architectural styles of Rudolf (R.M.) Schindler and Paul Williams are heavily reflected in the residences, hotels, department stores, and office buildings, and in the re-gentrification and current alternative uses for many historic-cultural landmarks in this section of L.A. L.A. Westside/Brentwood/Santa Monica/Venice Located 20-miles from Downtown L.A., "the Beach" was a Sunday drive for L.A. residents in the early 20th century who built their "beach houses" along the coastline. The "Venice Canals" were designed to emulate the canals of Venice, Italy, but literally became uninhabitable due to poor drainage until the 1970's. Just as Pasadena was the domain of L.A.'s "old money", the "movie people" populated "The Westside", building their motion picture studios, mansions and country clubs along Sunset Boulevard, near the Beverly Hills Hotel and the UCLA campus. Homes which are "quintessentially" the 1950's and 1960's "ranch style" reflect the casual L.A. lifestyle which takes advantage of the mild weather, merging the indoors and outdoors. NOTE: Some evenings will be available for tour participants to attend additional theatre performances, concerts, etc., on their own at the various L.A. performing arts venues, if preferred. A listing of current performances, location, seating availability and ticket pricing can be obtained from the Hotel Concierge upon arrival. |
