"Presidential Libraries and Fall Foliage of the Midwest"©
October 18-26, 2010
While serving in office President Franklin D. Roosevelt inventoried
the vast quantities of papers and other materials he and his staff
had accumulated. Up to that time, many Presidential papers and
records had either been lost, destroyed, sold for profit, or ruined
by poor storage conditions. President Roosevelt sought a viable
solution. Advised by a number of noted historians and scholars,
he established a public repository to preserve the evidence of
the Presidency for future generations. Beginning a tradition that
continues to this day, Roosevelt raised funds from private resources
for the new facility and then designated its operation by the United
States government through the National Archives. This Tour takes
you by Deluxe Motor Coach through the American Midwest at the
height of Fall Foliage as you travel to FIVE Presidential Libraries.

ITINERARY: 9 Days / 8 Nights
DAY 1:
Travel to The City of Fountains — Kansas City, Missouri via deluxe motor coach. (B,L,D)
DAY 2:
Day Trip west to Abilene, Kansas for a tour of the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library and Museum. The
massive glass entry to the Library is highlighted with bronze work, depicting a buffalo head and blue stem grass. Loreda
Chiaro marble from Italy covers the walls, and the floors are Roman travertine trimmed with Breche d'Alep and Rouge
Fleuri marble from France. (B,L,D)
Day 3:
Day Trip to Independence, Missouri, for a tour of the Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum. The major
issues and events of Harry Truman’s Presidency are highlighted in a new 10,500 square foot exhibition, the centerpiece of
the Library’s ambitious renovation. A new permanent exhibition features the personal side of the life of Harry Truman and
his family, primarily through the many letters exchanged between Harry and Bess over the years. Upon returning to
Kansas City you’ll tour the new $26 million World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial which contains a glass floor
raised several feet above a field of red poppies, representing the 9-million combat deaths of the war and a stunning
recreation of No Man's Land, a 90 foot-long replica trench and a three-story screen depicting scenes from "the war to end
all wars." (B,L)
Day 4:
A visit to the Hallmark Visitor Center where you will step inside the creative minds of Hallmarks artists and writers, view
the 75 Emmy Awards won by the Hallmark Hall of Fame, walk through history with artifacts from over 90 years of
Hallmark history, and watch a skilled press operator as he produces a real Hallmark card. This afternoon, tour the
American Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum in the historic 18th and Vine District. You’ll
savor a delectable Kansas City barbeque dinner tonight. (B,D)
DAY 5:
You'll travel to West Branch, Iowa, for a visit to the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum to experience
the many sides of Iowa’s only President. The galleries begin with Hoover’s boyhood in Iowa, and continue on to the
Waldorf Towers in New York, where he spent the final years of his life. (B,L)
DAY 6:
The tour continues on to Springfield, Illinois, home of the new Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library, containing re-
creations depicting the life of Abraham Lincoln from his boyhood days in the log cabin through his journey to the White
House, culminating with the Ford's Theater, a recreation of the Presidential box, and the Funeral Train, a gallery
displaying a map of the route of Lincoln's funeral train together with advertisements and announcements inviting mourners
to pay their last respects. (B,D)
DAY 7:
En route to Little Rock, we'll also stop in Fulton, Missouri to visit the Churchill Museum, dedicated to the life and
legacy of one of the greatest leaders of the 20th Century. Located on the campus of Westminster College, the site of
Churchill’s famous “Iron Curtain Speech”, this memorial is housed in the beautiful and historic Church of St. Mary the
Virgin of Aldermanbury. This 12th century London church was destroyed in the Great Fire of London, and redesigned
by Sir Christopher Wren in 1677. Nearly three centuries later, it was again destroyed by German incendiary bombs, and
marked for demolition until Wren’s graceful masterpiece was saved by a bold idea to move it to its present site. Sir
Winston Churchill himself was intrigued by the imaginative idea of a restored Wren church in America’s heartland. (B,L,D)
DAY 8:
Travel to Little Rock, Arkansas, where you'll have a leisurely evening on your own. (B,L)
DAY 9:
Today's highlight is a guided tour the William J. Clinton Presidential Library and Museum, home to the largest
archival and museum holdings of any in the Presidential Library system. Have a peak into the Oval Office, or imagine
yourself discussing the fate of the country, as you sit in the chair of Madeleine Albright, Bruce Babbit, or another member
of the Presidential Cabinet. Following a visit to the Library’s Gift Shop and lunch, you’ll board the motorcoach for your
return Home. (B,L,D)
